Starting a business isn’t for the weak — or broke. Rich kids who inherit businesses often take the process for granted. Something quite different happened when Delt Forge was founded. Skills and work ethic met equipment and money, and a vision was fulfilled.
Tom Rose was working for someone else, ran a hammer for 13 years, and was promoted to foreman and supervisor — until he realized he could do it on his own.
He had a problem: He didn’t have the equipment or the money to build a shop.
It just so happened a gentleman he met on a snowmobiling trip was interested in investing in the business. He made it clear that there wasn’t going to be any money unless Tom ran the place. They remain business partners.
Tom also knew someone else in the forging industry who had equipment lying around. They worked it out to get it to Tom — and they’re still in touch to this day.
Trust is a big deal in the forging industry. So is family. So are relationships. The “DELT” in Delt Forge is an acronym created with the initials of Tom’s wife, Debbie, Ed (who had the money), his wife, Linda, and Tom.
The baton is being passed to his son, Jason, who went off on his own, spent time building houses and built up a business. He also had worked for Tom, who says, “He has a lot of me in him. He’s all about work.”
Tom and Debbie didn’t even have a computer when they started. Jason now gets to run a shop with an in-house machine shop, three induction lines and three hammers. Oh, and he has CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) software.
He has focused on creating a bigger team filled with great people. The growth of the company has translated into stability and enhanced morale.
